Pinchot Ave is named after Gifford Pinchot (1865-1946). Pinchot loved trees, and was the first head of the U.S. Forest Service, a position he gained sometime after sparing with President Teddy Roosevelt in a boxing match! Pinchot’s philosophy was to balance the practical demands of business and conservation, to “provide the greatest good for the greatest amount of people in the long run.” Pinchot was also an active member of the Tuna Club of Avalon, a private fishing club he visited yearly at Catalina Island, California. An interesting history… We can’t think of a better person to represent the efforts of our neighborhoods IWDD.
